As he aims to position the Flint Firebirds for future success, general manager Barclay Branch closed the deal on a promising trade with the contending Hamilton Bulldogs today.

Flint, which is currently in last place in the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League, shipped out 1998 birth year defenseman Nicolas Mattinen to Hamilton for 2000 birth year defender Riley McCourt and second and fifth round draft picks in 2023.

Branch offered his assessment of McCourt.

“Riley is a talented, young defenseman who brings skill, intelligence and competitiveness to the Firebirds, which will add to the present and future success of our program,” relayed the Firebirds GM.

And McCourt was upbeat in leaving Hamilton for Flint.

“Just excitement. With all the young talent on the Firebirds roster, it’s an exciting time to be moving to Flint,” said McCourt. “From the fans, to their facilities, to their billets, I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Firebirds and how professional everything is conducted.”
