Sault Ste. Marie product Nick Porco has a shot at playing for Canada’s under-18 summer hockey team. The 2001 birth-year left winger is fresh from his rookie season in the Ontario Hockey League as a first-round draft pick of the Saginaw Spirit.

Porco has been added to the list of the nation’s top under-18 hockey prospects who will gather in Calgary on Saturday of this week to vie for spots on the Team Canada squad that will compete at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup that will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer from August 6-11.

An injury to another prospect opened the door for Porco to be one of 44 players — 26 forwards, 14 defensemen and four goalies — who will attend the selection camp that is being held in Calgary.

Canada won the 2017 edition of the event that included 18 of its players who were selected at the 2018 National Hockey League draft. Canada has won the gold medal 21 times in the 27 years of summer under-18 competition.

Porco is eligible for the 2019 NHL draft.
