There is a high-end player on the Ontario Hockey League market. Sault Ste. Marie product Nick Porco has asked the Saginaw Spirit to trade him, Hockey News North has confirmed.

The third-year winger, who Saginaw took in the first round, fourth overall, at the 2017 OHL priority selections draft, has two goals, two assists, four points in nine games for the Spirit thus far this season.

A favourite to win the Western Conference title, Saginaw as a team is instead struggling with a 4-4-1 record in the early going of the 2019-2020 campaign.

Porco, who has a 2001 birth date, is coming off of a 2018-2019 regular season in which he scored 20 goals, 16 assists, 36 points and added three goals, four assists, seven points in the playoffs.

Known for his separation speed and being a high character individual, Porco became a fifth-round pick of the Dallas Stars at the 2019 National Hockey League draft.

Of note, Joe McDonnell, who is the director of amateur scouting for Dallas, told Hockey News North that the 6-foot, 180-pound Porco was “a standout … he looked really, really good” at the Stars rookie and main camps prior to the start of this season.

What you think about “Porco wants out of Saginaw”

  1. The kid is really good, and the only way for him to develop his game is to move to another team. Saginaw is a powerhouse and probably have him on the third line. Too many superstars always leads to disaster, and I’m guessing he will produce more high-end stats once traded to a team that will likely have him on the first two lines.
