Respect for the Troops
It’s do or die today for the North Bay Battalion. And do still doesn’t guarantee anything for the desperate Ontario Hockey League team.
Even if North Bay defeats the Kingston Frontenacs in today’s Game 68 matinee match in the Gateway City, Niagara IceDogs will need to lose in regulation time against the Mississauga Steelheads to force a tie-breaking tilt for the eighth-and-final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The playoff-bound Sudbury Wolves helped out North Bay on Saturday night by defeating Niagara 4-3 in regulation time.
In going up against Kingston today, North Bay is playing a Frontenacs team that has won the three previous match-ups with the Battalion. And the regular-season finale has meaning for Kingston, which is trying to stay ahead of the Hamilton Bulldogs for fourth place and home-ice advantage in their upcoming playoff series.
Make the playoffs or not, a few words of praise for the Battalion.
One of the things I have admired most of late of the Battalion is its never-say-never mentality.
Even in the ticking seconds of Friday’s 5-2 loss to Sudbury, North Bay was still crashing the net. That mind frame will help the Battalion today.
As legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks once said: “Great moments are born from great opportunity and that’s what you have here tonight, boys.”
Hey Amanda……Thanks for the kind words for our Battalion. Unfortunately, they weren’t up to the task this afternoon. Both Sudbury and Mississauga did their part by defeating Niagara, leaving the door open for North Bay to get a crack at the playoffs by beating Kingston. However, it was not to be, and the Troops let a 3-1 lead slip away in a 5-4 loss on home ice. Dang it! It’ll be a longer summer than we would have liked.
