Spirit seeks to snap skid

It is a young team, one of the youngest in the Ontario Hockey League. But Saginaw Spirit has lost three straight games and with a 1-4-1 record through six outings could use a return to the win column with a pair of home contests coming up.

Saginaw plays host to the Kitchener Rangers tonight and the Mississauga Steelheads on Sunday.

Home is where the Spirit has won its only game of the 2017-2018 season.

Still, Saginaw’s home record is sub-par at 1-2-1 and coupled with an 0-2-0 record away from the Dow Event Center, the Spirit sits near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, just ahead of the London Knights.

Looking at the numbers, Saginaw’s 1-4-1 record is mirrored by the fact that the Spirit has scored just 15 goals in six games while giving up 24. And the Spirit has surrendered six goals in each of its last three games.

On the offensive side, forwards Damien Giroux and Cole Coskey lead Saginaw with three goals each. But on the flip side of that is the fact that center Brady Gilmour, who scored 26 goals for the Spirit in 2016-2017, has yet to find range in 2017-2018.

It’s still very early in the season. But the Spirit needs to rise soon.
