Sudbury Wolves head coach David Matsos and the Ontario Hockey League team have opted to go separate ways, HockeyNewsNorth.com has confirmed.

In a statement issued by the OHL team, it noted that the Wolves and Matsos “have mutually agreed to part ways.”

Matsos had been with the Wolves since 2013, initially as associate coach. He then took over as head coach midway through the 2014-2015 campaign.

Wolves general manager Rob Papineau said the OHL team and Matsos “were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension.

“In the end, we agreed to allow David to pursue other opportunities that can provide better stability for himself and his family,” Papineau relayed.

Matsos had one year left on his existing contract with the Wolves.

Papineau also confirmed that associate coach Barry Smith will not return to the Wolves but that assistant coach Darryl Moxam will be retained.

What you think about “Wolves, coach part company”

  1. Dario just power washed the last vestiges of the old regime out. Should help with recruiting. Great junior hockey town like Sudbury shouldn’t be a place where professional hockey dreams go to die.
