Sudbury Wolves and Guelph Storm have completed a major Ontario Hockey League trade involving defensemen Owen Lalonde and Nolan Makkonen and a bounty of high draft picks.

Lalonde, who had asked Sudbury to trade him, heads to Guelph for Makkonen, four second-round draft picks and two third-round selections.

Sudbury’s first-round pick, second overall, at the 2016 OHL draft — behind defenseman Ryan Merkley, who went first overall to Guelph — Lalonde had 2 goals, 10 assists, 12 points as a 2000 birth-year rookie in 2016-2017.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Makkonen, who has a 1999 birth date, moved up to Guelph and the OHL midway through the 2016-2017 campaign after beginning it with the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League. He was a ninth-round pick of the Storm at the 2015 OHL draft and is represented by Cain Hockey Management.

Makkonen joins fellow Sault Ste. Marie products, twin brother forwards Darian Pilon and Drake Pilon, on the Wolves roster. The pesky Pilons played in Sudbury as 1998 birth-year rookies last season.

What you think about “Wolves get Nolan Makkonen”

  1. Good trade for the Wolves to get all a the draft picks + a good solid D for a kid who did not want to be here.

  2. Love the Storm defence going forward. The top two picks in the 2016 draft for possibly the next 3 years. Not too shabby.
