When Chrissy Colizza heads to McGill University to play women’s hockey in the fall, she will follow a long line of immediate family members who performed athletically at the famed Montreal school of high learning.

The young lady, whose Colizza roots date back to generations of family in Sault Ste. Marie, will be wearing the same colours of the McGill Redmen that her dad and three uncles did dating back to 1969.

A high-scoring centre with the intermediate AA level Ottawa Lady 67’s, Chrissy had interest from a number of USA-based Division 1 hockey programs before deciding to follow family footsteps and choose McGill, where she has obtained an athletic-academic scholarship based on hockey-playing skills and a 95 per cent average in the Grade 12 classroom.

Before moving to Ottawa with her parents, Vince and Tina Colizza, Chrissy lived in Sault Ste. Marie and played most of her hockey in her dad’s hometown.

Her dad and his older brothers Jim and Sam and younger brother Joe all attended McGill and played sports there.

A standout high school quarterback at St. Mary’s College in Sault Ste. Marie, Chrissy’s dad Vince took his football skills to McGill starting in 1979.

Before Vince, older brothers Jim and Sam played both hockey and football at McGill.

Jim started at McGill in 1969 and Sam followed in 1976. Later, in 1982, younger brother Joe headed to McGill to play football.

Chrissy, who will study Health Sciences when she heads to McGill, has athletic roots that extend beyond her dad and uncles as her first cousin, Chris Thorburn, is a veteran National Hockey League right winger with the Winnipeg Jets. Chris’s mom, the former Linda Colizza, is one of Vince’s seven sisters.
