Me, a Maple Leafs fan?

I doubt that my two favourite National Hockey League teams, the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens, will be Stanley Cup contenders come the 2018-2019 season. Ergo, it might be time to hop on the Toronto Maple Leafs bandwagon.

Not only can the Maple Leafs be called Ontario’s team, Toronto has moved up to the elite level of the NHL.

Then there is the Ontario Hockey League connection that makes the Maple Leafs an attractive team to cheer for.

New Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is not only a Sault Ste. Marie native but he cut his teeth in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds. Wouldn’t it be something if the boy wonder was able to bring the Stanley Cup home to the Soo as the GM of the Maple Leafs?

Then there is a foursome of London Knights grads who have key roles with the Maple Leafs — president Brendan Shanahan and centres Nazem Kadri, Mitch Marner and John Tavares. To be sure, it is rather amazing that the three star centres all finished their respective OHL careers with London.

At any rate, at the risk of offending my late father Fred — who was a big Montreal fan — I am hereby declaring my intention to apply for membership in the Maple Leafs fan club for the upcoming season.

Besides, my soon-to-be-seven-year-old nephew, Owen, is also a Maple Leafs fan, complete with jersey and hat.

And I already told the kid to hand that Leafs hat over.

At any rate, me a Maple Leafs fan?

As venerable Maple Leafs play-by-play announcer Joe Bowen might say: “Holy Mackinaw.”
