Freshman defenceman Owen Headrick scored his first goal, freshman goalie Nick Kossoff posted a shutout in his first collegiate start and the Lake Superior State University Lakers won their first game of the 2015-2016 season.

Playing at home on Saturday as part of the annual Great Lake State Weekend, the Lakers blanked their Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival Northern Michigan University Wildcats 4-0 before more than 2,400 fans at Taffy Abel Arena.

The win for the Lakers came after they had lost their first three starts of the 2015-2016 season.

For Headrick, a 1997 birth-year product from Garden River First Nation who was a standout the past two seasons with the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League, his first collegiate goal came on the power play.

Kossoff, in getting the shutout in his collegiate debut, made 19 saves between the LSSU pipes.

The Lakers begin WCHA conference play when they travel to Michigan State University next weekend for a pair of games against the Spartans. Then, on the Oct. 30-31 weekend, the Lakers will play host to the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
