Blind River Beavers have won a playoff series for only the second time since joining the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League in 1999.

Mark Bastianello scored the goal and Myles Hektor made 45 saves as coach Kyle Brick’s Beavers edged the visiting Rayside-Balfour Canadians 1-0 in tonight’s seventh-and-deciding game of the hard-fought series.

Close to 600 fans took in the match at Blind River Memorial Community Centre.

Each of the last five games in the series was decided by one goal.

With the win, Blind River will meet the Soo Eagles in the West Division final.

The only other time Blind River won an NOJHL playoff series was back in the 2008-2009 season when the Todd Stencill-coached Beavers ousted the Paul Theriault-coached Eagles.

As for this version of the Beavers-Eagles playoff series, it will begin in Blind River with Games 1 and 2 this Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (6:30 p.m.)

Games 3 and 4 are slated for Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Soo on Wednesday, April 5 (7 p.m.) and Friday, April 7 (7:30 p.m.)

What you think about “Beavers to face Eagles”

  1. I remember the 2008-2009 season very well, I was game night coordinator with the Beavers at that time. It was so exciting to have been part of the team for that, Stencill did a great job. The days of Billy Stone and Randy Willis as goalies…too many players to mention!
Congrats to this year’s team for making it this far again!

  2. Within three years seasons, the Beavers went from not winning a single game to winning a playoff series. This is a milestone for the Blind River Beavers organization and it shows this team is determined to reach the finals. Way to go Blind River.

  3. Congrats to Kyle and the entire organization on a great season. Good luck the rest of the way. Go Beavers Go!

  4. Good luck to the beavers and kyle brick and also good luck to the timmins rock. A special shout out to the fans from both teams that showed up in droves last night to see their teams clinch a trip to the next round. Great to see that hockey is alive and well in the great white north.

  5. The 50/50 in timmins was over 3 grand the 50/50 at the Kingston Frontenacs game was $2200. Unreal Go Rock Go

  6. Oh my gosh and what a game it was.
Congrats to the Beaver Team and Coaching staff for a job well done in a game
that could have went either way.
This was a long and physical series as will be the next one against the Eagles.
Get some well deserved healing and rest time.
We fans have had a lot of entertainment this season, cheering loudly and using noise makers, not to mention sitting on the edge of our seats.
