A book about the Greyhounds

If you are a passionate fan or follower of the Soo Greyhounds then there is a recently-published book that you just might want to read.

Hound Town is a 270-page-book by Sault Ste. Marie author Frank Sarlo and is a detailed history of Sault Ste. Marie’s Ontario Hockey League team that dates back to 1972.

Not a book that intends to stir controversy or much in the way of debate, Hound Town instead serves as a labour-of-love look at a revered, well-supported team through the eyes of Sarlo, who has a 45-year association with the OHL club as a lawyer, part-owner and cheer-leading fan.

Delightfully written with considerable attention to detail, Hound Town is neither hard-hitting or tell-all, though its historical accuracy is without compromise.

In a nutshell, Hound Town may be best described as the account of a love affair between a hockey team and the city in which it thrives, via the words and experiences of the author Sarlo.

While researching material for Hound Town, Sarlo took the time to delve into numerous Sault Star and Sault This Week newspaper articles written about the Greyhounds via the vast archives that have been maintained through the years by long-time fan and season-ticket holder Chris Sierzputowski.

Through its pages and chapters, Hound Town aims to examine the close and unyielding relationship between the Greyhounds and the Sault Ste. Marie community.

Copies of Hound Town are available for purchase locally at locations that include Stone’s Office Equipment on Queen St. in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

The book can also be ordered on line via houndtownhockey.com.

What you think about “A book about the Greyhounds”

  1. Nicely written, Randy.
My first meeting with Frank was back in the 50’s when he and a number of other upstart basketball rookies from the then new St. Mary’s College (grade 9’s and 10’s I believe) , tried to compete with my older “B” team at Sault Collegiate.
And even though they lost by a substantial score each game, they were always a fun bunch of guys that just enjoyed playing.
Frank and the others were quite a great group of fellows.
Best wishes with your book, Frank.

  2. The Soo Greyhounds are one of the most-successful CHL teams, along with the Oshawa Generals and the Peterborough Petes who have won several OHL championships and all three teams have won at least 1 Memorial Cup in the past 37 years.

The most-memorable was the Greyhounds adopting a new logo in 1996, before slowly returning to the old traditional logo in 1999 and in full retro in 2013.

  3. Wow, to say that I was excited when I heard Frank was taking on this huge endeavour had to be the biggest understatement of all-time! It was so awesome that all my collection efforts of over thirty years could prove beneficial ! It was so much fun talking with Frank and reminiscing about the storied history of the franchise. Re-reading the articles by Randy Russon, Peter Ruicci, Steve Buist, Bob McKenzie and others only served to excite me more about Frank’s project! Congratulations Frank! I recommend all SOO Greyhound fans get a copy, you won’t be disappointed ! The only thing I’m left wondering, who will write the next chapters and what will the future bring………..
