A fine start for Flint

Three wins in succession — after an opening night setback — have the Flint Firebirds off to a 3-1-0 start to begin the 2019-2020 Ontario Hockey League season.

The three wins in four games is a startling contrast to the 2018-2019 campaign. Which is when Flint had only three victories through its first 34 outings en route to missing the OHL playoffs for a second straight season and placing last in the Western Conference.

This time around, the Firebirds are a good mix of seasoned talent and the tireless work of third-year general manager Barclay Branch is beginning to show.

Of note, second-year center Evan Vierling is tied for the Flint scoring lead with six points in four games, including five assists.

Vierling was Flint’s first-round pick, second overall, at the 2018 OHL priority selections draft. And after a very slow start to the 2018-2019 term, he finished with a flourish, collecting 11 points in the final eight games of the season.

In all, Vierling had 6 goals, 21 assists, 27 points in 60 games in his rookie OHL season.
