Free-agent goalie Peyton Grainer has committed to the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League. The Metro Detroit product, who has a 2002 birth date, opted to choose a player agreement and education package with the OHL Firebirds over National Collegiate Athletic Association options.

Grainer is coming off of a 2018-2019 season in which he had 30-5-0 record and a 1.51 goals against average with the Detroit Little Caesars minor midgets.

The Firebirds say Grainer will split the 2019-2020 season between Flint and the OHL and the Detroit Belle Tire major midgets of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association.

Grainer provides Flint with youthful depth at the goalie position behind overage (1999 birth date) standout Anthony Popovich and 2001 birth year sidekick Luke Cavallin.

Popovich, who is attending the National Hockey League training camp of the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent, was recently acquired by Flint from the Guelph Storm. Popovich back-stopped Guelph to the 2018-2019 OHL championship.

Cavallin, meanwhile, is slated to begin his third OHL season in Flint in 2019-2020.
