Flint Firebirds could be closing in on the hiring of their new associate coach and assistant coach ahead of the 2019-2020 Ontario Hockey League season.

Darcy Findlay served as the associate and Garrett Rutledge was the assistant under Firebirds head coach Eric Wellwood when the 2018-2019 OHL season ended.

But as Hockey News North was first to report earlier this week, neither Findlay or Rutledge will be returning to Flint for a second season in 2019-2020.

Since then, Firebirds assistant general manager and director of player development Joe Stefan has indicated that Flint may be close to filling out its coaching staff under Wellwood.

Stefan has noted that the Firebirds are “looking for coaches who have experience at working with players at the OHL level … and we think we have found the two guys.”
