Saginaw Spirit has surpassed its victory total from the 2017-2018 Ontario Hockey League season and in the process solidified its hold on third place in the Western Conference.

The rising Spirit won its fifth straight game on Friday night, a 7-1 road thumping of the Kingston Frontenacs. The win boosted Saginaw’s record to 30-12-4 through 46 games.

Saginaw posted a regular season record of 29-30-9 in 2017-2018 and then lost in four straight games to the Soo Greyhounds in the first round of the playoffs.

With its latest win, Saginaw now has a record of 19-3-2 since Chris Lazary replaced the fired Troy Smith as head coach.

Sault Ste. Marie products Nick Porco and Camaryn Baber both had a hand in Saginaw’s Friday win over Kingston. Porco tallied twice and Baber added a solo marker.

With 64 points, Saginaw is one point back of the second-place Soo in the Western Conference standings with the Greyhounds holding a game in hand.
