Riding the crest of a three-game weekend sweep and with a record of 7-0-1 in its last eight outings, the Saginaw Spirit has surged into third place in the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League.

After winning on the road against the Soo Greyhounds on Friday, Saginaw returned home to upend the Erie Otters on Saturday and then blanked the visiting Flint Firebirds today.

Saginaw now has 46 points from a record of 21-11-4.

A coaching change is also working out well for the Spirit, which fired bench boss Troy Smith after 22 games and a record of 11-9-2. Since replacing Smith and promoting Chris Lazary from associate to head coach, Saginaw has a record of 10-2-2 in 14 games.
