Callum McAuley has become the latest local lad to ask for and receive a trade from the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League. The Thunderbirds have dealt the 2006 birth year forward to the St. Mary’s Lincolns of the Greater Ontario Hockey League in a cash transaction.

McAuley, who was the Thunderbirds captain, leaves a lasting legacy with the NOJHL team. In 127 games, regular season and playoffs included, McAuley totalled 55 goals, 57 assists, 112 points for the T-Birds in an NOJHL career that began in 2023.

He is the second local and team captain to ask for a trade from the Thunderbirds in less than a year. Previously, before the start of this season, 2006 birth year defenseman Gage Evans was dealt to the LaSalle Vipers of the GOHL.

Also, ahead of this season, 2006 birth year forward and Sault Ste. Marie product Camden Cowan was traded by the Thunderbirds to the Blind River Beavers of the NOJHL.

What you think about “Soo T-Birds trade captain”

  1. Wondering what the underlying issue is as to why all these soo boys want out of the soo? On the other hand I’m greatful that when they ask to be let go that actually happens. I was in my third year for the beavers (2 decades ago haha) and asked if I could be traded to the thunderbirds. I was finding it difficult because I lived in echo bay and just started attending Sault college, so I would drive to the Sault for school, and then have to drive to blind river for practice. I was on the road for almost 4 hours a day and it was difficult to keep up with my grades. The beavers wouldn’t trade me. I sat out and didn’t play all season so I could get a college education. The beavers had the nerve to call me before playoffs to see if I would play. Was finally traded to the thunderbirds for my final jr season. I’m sure things were different then and maybe there was a reason it happened that way for me, but something seems odd right now with the Sault club.

  2. Nick Sr, I have played for this person in the past, the ones who leave are soft and don’t want to hear the truth.
