Cochrane Crunch owner-general manager-coach Ryan Leonard has confirmed the hiring of former Iroquois Falls Eskis bench boss Jamy Bernier.

Bernier takes on a new full-time position as assistant coach-assistant general manager of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League team. He was the head coach in Iroquois Falls during the 2016-2017 season but became available when the Eskis were recently sold and relocated to Hearst effective the 2017-2018 campaign.

Leonard knows what he is getting in Bernier.

“I watched him coach at the midget level a few years ago and with Iroquois Falls this past season he took on a team with not a lot of tools and still was able to get them to compete,” Leonard said of Bernier.

Leonard told HockeyNewsNorth.com that the addition of Bernier increases the Crunch coaching staff to three as Jim Newell will remain on as a part-time assistant.

Bernier will “add another voice in the locker room,” said Leonard. “Now there will be more of a variety and I am looking forward to seeing how Jim, Jamy and myself can work together to try to bring a championship team to Cochrane.”
