Midget-aged forward Justin Mauro of Sault Ste. Marie has signed with the Blind River Beavers of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League, Hockey News North has confirmed.

Mauro, who has a 2002 birth date, was picked by the Erie Otters in the 15th round of the 2018 Ontario Hockey League priority selections draft from the Soo Minor Midget Thunderbirds of the Great North Midget Hockey League.

The 5-foot-5, 135-pound Mauro led the Soo minor midgets in scoring over the course of the 2017-2018 Great North season.

In 22 games, the speedy Mauro netted 9 goals, 7 assists, 16 points on a Soo team that won only two of 24 regular season matches.

Blind River coach-general manager Kyle Brick told Hockey News North that despite his young age, the Beavers did not hesitate to sign Mauro.

“We are excited about Justin joining our hockey team, he made quite the impact on our staff this past weekend at main camp,” Brick began.

“Justin is a player I spent a lot of time watching last year with the minor midgets, his speed, creativity and scoring touch will fit nicely into our lineup,” Brick continued.

“We knew we had a player when our returning captain Caleb Serre came up to me and said, ‘don’t let that kid leave unsigned.’ That’s how much of an impact Justin had at our main camp,” Brick concluded.
