T-Birds are Great North champs

Well done, Soo Thunderbirds.

Call it a triumphant return to the Great North Midget Hockey League for Sault Ste. Marie after a one-year hiatus.

After not being able to ice a team during the 2013-2014 season for a variety of reasons — hockey-related and political — the Soo returned to to the GNMHL in 2014-2015 in the form of the Thunderbirds.

Well, after finishing a strong second during the regular season, the Thunderbirds capped a two-series playoff run on Sunday with a 5-4 win over the regular-season champion New Liskeard Cubs.

With home-ice wins on both Saturday and Sunday, the Jim Capy-coached Thunderbirds took the best-of-five final three games to one.

The GNMHL title gives the T-Birds a berth at the Ontario Hockey Federation, Central Region playdowns.

The OHF championships are slated for March 30-April 5 in Toronto.
