Soo Atom Wildcats strike gold

Hail to the champs.

Soo Great Lakes Bus Atom BB Wildcats captured the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championship over the weekend.

A balanced attack on offense, solid defense and outstanding goaltending led the Wildcats to a perfect 6-0 record.

The Wildcats began the tournament with a 4-0 whitewash of the Aurora Panthers. Isabelle Deady-Bell recorded the shutout while Sierra Drodge netted two goals with solos from Mya Headrick and Erika Beitz.

In the second game, Tate Hartley recorded the shutout in another 4-0 victory for the Wildcats — this time over the North York Storm. Kylie Esposito, Kendall Boissoneau, Beitz and Headrick tallied the goals.

The Wildcats closed out the round-robin with a 2-1 victory over the Oakville Hornets led by Headrick, who scored both goals.

In the quarter-finals, the Wildcats defeated the Woolwich Wild 2-0 behind Deady-Bell’s flawless netminding. Taryn Greco and Headrick handled the scoring.

In the semi-finals, the Wildcats battled the Russell Castor River Coyotes and came away with a 3-2 victory. In that one, the Wildcats came back from a 2-1 deficit in the third period on the strength of two goals in 21 seconds then held the lead with solid defense and clutch saves by Deady-Bell. Sophie Jaremko had the game winner while Beitz and Drodge had the other two goals.

In the gold-medal game, the Wildcats closed out the championship with a 2-0 victory over the Flamborough Falcons. Deady-Bell had the shutout while Jaremko and Boissoneau netted the goals.

Staff members are head coach Steve Caruso, assistant coaches Jamie Greco and Matt Parker, assistant coach/trainer Shannon Spacek and manager Teresa Perri.
