Sault Ste. Marie native Bronson Kovacs has been named most valuable player for the first round of the playoffs in the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation’s MOL Liga.

The 26-year old defenseman is in his second season in Hungary and his first with MAC Budapest.

Kovacs earned the MVP honours from the first round of the MOL Liga playoffs by scoring four goals in five games from his blueline position as MAC Budapest advanced to the second round.

With dual citizenship as a Canadian-Hungarian, his grandfather, the late Zoltan Kovacs Sr., is originally from Keszthely, Hungary.

Before heading to Hungary to play pro hockey, Kovacs was a four-year academic standout and senior-year team captain with the Hobart College Statesmen, a Division 3, National Collegiate Athletic Association program.

Growing up in the Soo, Kovacs advanced to play for the Soo North Stars (now Greyhounds) of the Great North Midget Hockey League and Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

While he told HockeyNewsNorth.com that he is “missing the family back home in the Soo” that includes his parents, Zoltan Jr. (Toots) and Diana, the big defenseman is nonetheless looking ahead to the next round of the MOL Liga playoffs.

“The playoffs are always a long haul and when you can have a couple of extra days off to relax and and recover from injuries it is always welcome, especially when the other team finished up a seven-game series and after a one-day rest they are traveling to Budapest,” Kovacs relayed via the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation website.

Kovacs said he likes the makeup of his MAC Budapest team.

“We have a deep team this year which is nice. We don’t have to rely on a couple of guys, everyone has been chipping in and helping out, it has been a real team effort.”
