Sault College Cougars began their Division 2, American Collegiate Hockey Association season on the weekend with a pair of losses to the Miami of Ohio Red Hawks.

Despite the games being played at Big Bear Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, they served as home contests for the Cougars, who are the only Canadian men’s team in the ACHA.

At any rate, the Cougars lost both games to the powerhouse visitors from Miami of Ohio, coming up short by 9-1 and 7-3 scores. Cougars head scout Charly Murray told Hockey News North that the Sault College men were in both games through two periods only to “run out of gas in the third.” Murray added that the Cougars were “much better” in the second game and that Sault College goalie Cedric Joubert was “outstanding.”

Jon Tagoona scored Sault College’s only goal in the 9-1 loss. Then, in the 7-3 defeat in which Sault College trailed 4-3 well into the third period, veteran forward Caleb Wood and rookie wingers Christian Omollo and Pineshish Whiteduck all scored goals for the Cougars.

Up next for Sault College are a pair of October 8-9 games slated for across the St. Mary’s River at the Norris Centre against the Lake Superior State Lakers.
