Dylan Szabo (20) and the Soo Indians celebrate a recent victory

After skating for several seasons on the Ontario side of the St. Mary’s River at Sault Ste. Marie — including the past two in the Great North Under 18 Hockey League — Dylan Szabo has returned home to play for the AAA Soo Indians of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association.

A 2003 birth year forward who is well known for his hustle and work ethic, the 5-foot-11, 175 pound Szabo developed his game over the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 terms playing for coach Jamie Henderson and the Soo Jr. Greyhounds.

Szabo showed productive progress over two seasons of play in the Great North.

After netting four goals, two assists, six points in 24 games as a 15-year old in 2018-2019, Szabo upped those totals to 11-11-22 in 38 outings as a 16-year old in 2019-20220 and became a top two-way player for Henderson and the Jr. Greyhounds.

Now, back on Michigan side and playing for heralded local coach John Ferroni, Szabo is tied for the goal scoring lead on the aforementioned Soo Indians with five tallies in 20 games for an under 18 team that has an overall record of 4-13-3 but has an impressive 3-1-2 mark over its last six outings.

The Indians are on the road to play the Cleveland Barons this weekend.

Of note, Ferroni — who is in his first season as the bench boss of the Indians — is a former head coach of considerable success with his hometown Sault High Blue Devils.

In seven seasons as the head master at Sault High, Ferroni led the Blue Devils to an overall record of 132-57-9 as a state powerhouse.

And back during his playing days, Ferroni was a dependable forward over four seasons for the old Soo Indians of the erstwhile International Jr. B Hockey League, suiting up for them from 1978 to 1982.
