Eyes on Blake Speers, Owen Headrick

Blake Speers just turned 17-years old but the eyes of the pro scouts are already on him.

The hometown centre, who the Soo Greyhounds snagged with the 11th pick of the 2013 Ontario Hockey League draft, seems to have it all, except maybe size.

And in today’s game where the emphasis is back on skill, speed and smarts more than size, Speers has a shot at doing superb things by the time his OHL career ends in another three years.

Sources say Speers, who has a 1997 birth date, is already being scouted for the 2015 National Hockey League draft and that the potential is there for the slick pivot to be a first-or-second-round pick.

Don’t surprised, by the way, if a former Soo Thunder teammate of Speers also ends up being on the 2015 NHL draft list.

That would be 1997 birth-year defenceman Owen Headrick, a 14th-round pick of the Erie Otters in 2013 who already has a full-ride scholarship offer on the table from the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association, Lake Superior State Lakers.

Headrick, an excellent skater with a heavy right-handed shot, is currently a rookie sensation with the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.
