Soo Thunderbirds can win the Great North Midget Hockey League championship this weekend without leaving home.

For starters, the Thunderbirds will play host to the New Liskeard Cubs tonight at 7 p.m. in Game 3 of the best-of-five, GNMHL finals at John Rhodes Community Centre.

Game 4 is slated for Sunday at 4:30 p.m., also at the Rhodes Centre.

If a fifth-and-deciding game in the series is necessary, it would be played in New Liskeard on Wednesday.

The teams split the first two games last weekend in New Liskeard.

Among the offensive playoff standouts for the Thunderbirds thus far has been forward Matt MacKay, who has 6 goals, 5 assists, 11 points in 7 post-season matches.

Meanwhile, both teams have been getting good goaltending throughout the playoffs — Joey Roberts for the Soo and New Liskeard’s Tyler Mazzocato.

The Thunderbirds will be buoyed tonight by the return of top defenceman Matt Murray, who has served a three-game, league-imposed suspension from the previous playoff series against the North Bay Trappers.
