Jordan Smith to the NHL
Sault Ste. Marie native Jordan Smith is headed to the Show. The 40 year old Smith has been hired as an assistant coach by the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League.
Smith moves up to Vancouver under new Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra. Smith was previously an assistant to Malhotra with the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League.
Before his time in the AHL, Smith spent five seasons as an associate coach in the Ontario Hockey League, working for both the Soo Greyhounds and Sudbury Wolves. He also served as the head coach of the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr.Hockey League from 2013 to 2017 where he was two time coach of the year and two time champion.
Before a serious eye injury ended his career, Smith played in 60 career games in the AHL after spending parts of four OHL seasons with his hometown Greyhounds as a hard rock defenseman. He is also a former second round NHL draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks.
