Lady Cougars still roaring

It was an all Canadian final between two teams of Cougars for the American Collegiate Hockey Association women’s national championship. And it was the Sault College Cougars who upended the Assiniboine College Cougars of Brandon, Manitoba in the title tilt.

Competing at the Division 2 level of the ACHA women’s championships in St. Louis, Missouri, Sault College cuffed Assiniboine by a resounding 6-2 score to give the Lady Cougars their third consecutive crown of glory.

Sault College jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period of the recent winner take all contest and never looked back.

Emma Lee of Sault College opened the scoring three and a half minutes into the match before Assiniboine’s Madison Haliuk tied the game within the next four minutes of play. But then Sault College went to work as Materia Land put the eventual three peat champs ahead with a natural hat trick to make it a 4-1 lead.

Sault College took a 5-1 advantage early in the second period on a goal by Payton Stos before Brooklyn Franklin scored for Assiniboine to cut the Sault College lead and make it a 5-2 score. But that was as close as the Manitoba based women would get as Emily Moore capped off the scoring for Sault College with an empty net tally.

Goalie Farrah Farstad made 27 saves for Sault College in the win and was named the national tournament’s most valuable player after recording three straight shutouts en route to the roar of the championship game triumph.
