Oh, so close for Sault High

Close but no cigar. All in all, though, it was a passing grade for a Sault High Blue Devils hockey team that extended a short season into two rounds of the playoffs.

An even record of 5-5-0 in an abbreviated 2020-2021 regular season that did not begin until February 10 because of COVID-19 came to a halt on March 18 when Sault High came within a last minute goal of making it to the Michigan high school hockey Region 18 playoff finals.

Before losing to the Alpena Wildcats 3-2 in the semi finals on that last minute marker, Sault High scored a 5-2 victory over the host Tawas Braves in the Region 18 quarter finals.

Aaron Kogan scored both goals for Sault High in the semi final setback after Jory Homminga had netted the hat trick in the quarter final triumph.

The Blue Devils overall record of 6-6-0, regular season and playoffs included, is more impressive considering that of the 12 games Sault High played, only four were on the home ice of Big Bear Arena.

Looking ahead to next season, Sault High can return all but five players.

Blue Devil senior skaters whose hockey careers at Sault High have come to an end include Gleb Bauman, Nick Sprague, Jack Swan, Alex French and Nick Gerrie.
