Soo Jr. Greyhounds have returned from Kapuskasing as Under 15 AA Northern Ontario Hockey Association champions.

The Jr. Greyhounds upended the Timmins North Stars 3-1 in Sunday’s title tilt. The championship win came after the Soo scored a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Temiskaming Shores in the semi-finals.

Coach Jerry Lortie and his U15 Jr. Greyhounds have thus earned a spot at the Ontario Hockey Federation championships that are slated for April 22-24 in North York. And Lortie commended the effort of his players in copping the NOSSA crown in Kap.

“We set our goal at the beginning of the season of playing in the all Ontario championship tournament,” Lortie told Hockey News North. “I am so proud of this team for battling through adversity all season and reaching their goals.

“I think we got better as the weekend went on and played our best hockey Sunday in the semis against Temiskaming and the finals against Timmins,” Lortie continued. “Timmins is a good team, they play hard and are well coached. The finals was a great group effort by our team after playing two overtimes in the semis.”

The Jr. Greyhounds had finished in first place during the regular season in the Nickel District Minor Hockey League’s Under 15 Division with a record of 19-5-0. Jr. Greyhounds forward Carter Huckson led the league in scoring and teammate Sammy Caruso had the most points of any player in the Nickel District loop.

NOHA champions!
