For the second successive season, Sault High Blue Devils have placed second at the Division 3, state championships.

Chasing its first high school hockey state championship since 1989, Sault High ran into a hot goaltender and lost 2-1 to Farmington Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth.

John Lethemon stopped 29 of 30 shots and Jason Petras scored both goals for Farmington to offset a solo tally by Blake Mastaw of Sault High.

The loss snapped a 19-game unbeaten streak for Sault High, which finished the 2013-2014 season with a record of 25-3-2.

“We had a really great run,” Sault High coach John Ferroni told radio station 1230 WSOO. “Our guys have nothing to hang their heads about or be ashamed of. We’re proud of this runner-up trophy.”

Sault High outshot the Farmington in every period — and 30-22 for the game — but Lethemon lived up to his advance billing as a shutdown goalie.
