TIMMINS — Soo Jr. Greyhounds gave the powerhouse host Timmins North Stars a mighty scare in the title tilt of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association Under 13 AA Tournament of Champions that was held here on the weekend.

But a last minute goal by Hayden Horbul — who was left all alone in the front of net — gave Timmins a 3-2 win over the Soo and the gold medal. Not only did the Jr. Greyhounds win silver but they will join the host North Stars as NOHA reps at the Ontario Hockey Federation championship tournament that will be held in Timmins on the April 19 to 21 weekend.

In the championship match of the NOHA Tournament of Champions, Timmins capped an unbeaten weekend with its 3-2 win over the Soo. Besides Horbul’s game winner, Colton Barber and Bailey Scott also scored for the North Stars. Ashlyn Ricard and Gavyn Nevers, with a shorthanded beauty, replied for the Jr. Greyhounds, who received a sensational goaltending performance from Owen Whitehead.

The hosts from Timmins had advanced to the championship match with a 12-0 pasting of the North Bay Trappers in the semi finals. The Soo punched its ticket into the finals with a 6-2 semi final victory over the Copper Cliff Reds in which Jr. Greyhounds goalie Carter Rome made a series of key saves in both the second and third periods when the game was close.

All in all, round robin and playoffs included, the host North Stars won all six of their games while the Jr. Greyhounds had a 4-2 record.

Top performers for the Jr. Greyhounds were the relentless Gavyn Nevers and pint size Mason Pagnotta with five goals apiece and tireless skater Tyler Diluzio with four. Between the pipes, Whitehead and Rome both won two games and were outstanding throughout.

NOTES: Jr. Greyhounds defenseman Owen Webb capped a steady weekend on the back end with his first goal of the season … The Jr. Greyhounds spun a 3-1 record during the round robin with a 4-0 loss to the eventual champions from Timmins the only defeat for the Soo.
