Some Saturday night winners

Checking out a few games from Saturday involving teams that we follow in the Ontario Hockey League, North American Hockey League and Midwest Jr. Hockey League.

OHL

Sudbury Wolves — who are in last place in the 20-team OHL — made it back-to-back wins with a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Kingston Frontenacs. Matt Schmalz netted two goals for Sudbury, which improved its record to 7-22-1 with the victory.

NAHL

Playing at home, Soo Eagles went to the shootout to edge the Michigan Warriors 9-8 in a wild one at Pullar Stadium. Mitch Vanderburg scored twice and added three assists and Keegan Miller had a two goal-two assist outing as the Eagles beat the Warriors for the third time this week — all in extra sessions. The Eagles remain in second place in the North Division with a record of 18-14-1.

Adam Carlson made 42 saves and the streaking Coulee Region Chill won its sixth straight game, a 4-3 decision over the Austin Bruins. Coulee Region is in third place in the tough Midwest Division with a record of 16-7-4.

MWJHL

Tory Shand, Adam Jonak and plum defenceman Jarrod Vroman all had three-point outings as the MC Monarchs cuffed the visiting Michigan Ice Dogs 6-1 to boost their record to 19-8.
