Soo teams are winners

Friday was a winning night for Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, Soo Eagles of the North American Hockey League, Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League and Batchewana Attack of the Canadian International Hockey League.

GREYHOUNDS 3, KINGSTON FRONTENACS 2

Local product Blake Speers tallied twice, giving the 17-year old forward 13 goals on the season as the Hounds upended visiting Kingston and boosted their record to 23-6-2.

Overage forward Robert Polesello scored twice for Kingston, his 13th and 14th goals of the campaign, and Lucas Peressini made 37 saves for the Frontenacs, who dressed just 16 skaters.

Kingston plays at Sudbury tonight. The Wolves, who are in last place overall in the OHL, blanked the visiting Windsor Spitfires 3-0 on Friday.

EAGLES 4, MICHIGAN WARRIORS 3

Trevor Cope’s overtime goal lifted the Soo past the visting Warriors and improved the Eagles record to 17-14-1.

Defenceman Michael Caruso had two assists for the Eagles, who play host to the Warriors again tonight in a 7 p.m. start at Pullar Stadium.

THUNDERBIRDS 6, BLIND RIVER BEAVERS 1

Joey Ogden scored twice as the Soo upended the visitors from Blind River who remain winless this season.

The Thunderbirds, with a record of 20-4-2, are home to the Sudbury Nickel Barons tonight in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at John Rhodes Community Centre.

ATTACK 7, ESPANOLA RIVERMEN 1

Playing on the road, the Attack got three goals apiece from Drake Pilon and Nate Harris in the triumph that boosted Batchewana’s record to a league-best 18-0-1.

The two teams will meet again next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rankin Arena in Sault Ste. Marie.

Then, on Sunday December 21, the Attack will play host to the Kalkaska Rhinos in a 2 p.m. matinee for which there will be a special pre-Christmas admission price of $5.

  1. feel horrible for the lads on that team, and the fan base as well ! hopefully the second half is kinder to the club and its fans ! good luck boys !
