Whew, that was close.

Soo Thunderbirds ousted the visiting North Bay Trappers 3-2 in double overtime on Tuesday to win the second-round, best-of-five, Great North Midget Hockey League playoff series three games to two.

Forward Zach Senecal beat Trappers goalie Colton Point at 3:40 of the second OT stanza to give the T-Birds the triumph.

Senecal (Oshawa Generals) and Point (Erie Otters) were both selected at the 2014 Ontario Hockey League draft.

With the win, the T-Birds advance to the GNMHL championship series against the New Liskeard Cubs.

Game 1 is set for Friday night in New Liskeard.

Brendan Gillis and Matt MacKay had the other goals for the T-Birds, who held a 2-1 lead until North Bay’s Devyn Martel tied the game with just over a minute to play in the third period.

Finn Seguin, with just under 10 minutes to play in the third, scored the other North Bay goal.

The T-Birds had won the opening two games of the series at home before the Trappers bounced back with a pair of wins last weekend in North Bay.

The Soo-New Liskeard final will match the top two teams during the regular season in a best-of-five series.

New Liskeard finished first during regular-season play, just two points ahead of second-place Soo.

What you think about “T-Bird midgets take out Trappers”

  1. Congrats to the boys for taking the series. New Liskeard Cubs will maul the Birds, Soo may take 1 game in the series, but not likely. New Liskeard is disciplined and their power play is lethal, they have the most balanced scoring attack in the league and finished first with good reason, a far better team than the Birds through the last 15 games of the season. Roberts will be tested often with quality shots, expect goals against to be higher than last series.

  2. Looks to me like Stan Butler and the OHL Battalion missed out on Colton Point right in there own back yard .. the kid did not go to Erie until the 14th Round .. surely the Battalion could of drafted him before that.

    1. Don’t you worry,

Stan is one of the best GMs in the OHL. He will have someone solid to back up Smith next season. Either by trade (Could be Point) or by the 2015 Priority Selection. It’s just too bad his one mistake in the 2014 Draft was a goalie who turned out to be a bust. There’s not a whole lot of rest for Matt Young in Powassan when Jack Ondrovic (The unfortunate bust) gets yanked every game he gets a start in. No fault to Wray but when your goalie lets in 3 goals on 4 shots your hands are tied.
