This is really positive news for minor hockey in the Timmins area. Hockey News North has confirmed that the Timmins Majors of the Great North Under 18 Hockey League are expanding their program with the formation of a U15 AAA team effective the 2023-2024 season.

Ron Holmes, the hard working general manager of the U18 AAA Majors, relayed the good news to Hockey News North relative to the new U15 AAA regional team for Timmins.

“As many hockey people in northern Ontario are very much aware, there is no AAA hockey in this community,” Holmes began. “The Timmins Majors board of directors has debated this endeavour for a while now and thought it was time to act on it. The U15 AAA Timmins Majors will be a true regional team and we are very hopeful that surrounding communities will support it. To add a U15 AAA team under our umbrella will be huge in terms of development for all players involved.”

The Majors will also continue their alliance with the Timmins Rock of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League, said Holmes.

“Our Majors program already works closely with (coach-general manager) Brandon Perry of the Timmins Rock and this will filter down to players on the U15 team who will have the opportunity to be affiliate players with our U18 program and work closely with our coaching staff … just as our U18 players AP with the Rock under the tutelage of Brandon and his staff.

“The opportunity to AP, practice and get into game action at a higher level is critical in terms of development. We are extremely excited for this opportunity and are working hard on having a successful, competitive U15 AAA team hit the ice in our inaugural season,” Holmes added.

An evaluation camp for the new U15 AAA team has already been set up, said Holmes.

“We have an evaluation camp booked for the weekend of April 28-30 in Timmins along with an information session for both players and parents. This is very exciting times for the Timmins Majors program and an excellent opportunity for those U15 players looking to play at the highest level,” summed up Holmes.
