For the Soo Under 12 AA Jr. Greyhounds, hockey has certainly proven to be about so much more than wins and losses and simply playing the game. To be sure, as team manager Kenny Deplonty noted, “putting on that red and white Soo Jr. Greyhounds jersey brings a responsibility to our community.

“For this group the lessons being learned are not only on the ice or at dryland, but they are also developing socially and emotionally through their friendships and by giving back to our community,” Deplonty noted. “In the fall we did a food drive for the Soup Kitchen … many of the players on our team were unaware of the Soup Kitchen and its services. As role models in our community these young men are learning about making a difference and the many amazing organizations who help so many in our community.”

And just recently, the U12 AA Jr. Hounds gave a big assist to a local group called ‘Save Our Young Adults.’

“Winter can be such a different experience for people. For hockey players, it is fun and exciting, but for others, it is cold, hard and long. SOYA helps to ease the hard for so many in our community,” Deplonty explained.

So, the U12 AA Jr. Hounds went to work on behalf of SOYA.

“We as a team, wanted to help so we collected hats, boots, mitts, anything warm for winter, toiletries — tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, personal hygiene items etc. — and non–perishable food items at our most recent home hockey games where we played the Copper Cliff Reds from Sudbury four times. We are proud of our wins that weekend but even more proud of what we can bring to our community in need. Thank you to SOYA for all they do for our community,” Deplonty relayed, in a heartfelt message, on behalf of the U12 AA Jr. Hounds.

SOYA operates out of a building at 180 Gore Street.
