U14 AA Hounds hang in

LONDON, Ontario — Close but not quite. Soo Under 14 AA Jr. Greyhounds made it to within a game of the championship match at the annual London Jr. Knights Fall Classic Hockey Tournament that was held here on the weekend.

The event featured 16 teams at the U14 AA level and the Jr. Greyhounds made it all the way to the final four before losing to the eventual champion London Jr. Green Knights by a 4-1 score. The Jr. Greyhounds were kept in the game by goalie Carter Rome and actually had a 1-0 lead in the second period on a goal by Bryce Perrott before the hosts from London tied it up and then put the contest away with three goals in the third period.

Before that, the U14 Jr. Hounds advanced to the title tilt of the playoff round with a tidy 4-2 victory over the Power City Bruins. In that game, Dante Caruso and Jasper Jarratt scored two goals apiece and Hayden Brason-Doan had two assists in support of goalie Owen Whitehead.

During the round robin portion of the event, the U14 Jr. Hounds had a record of 2-0-1 that included a 4-2 win over the St. Thomas Stars, a 3-2 triumph over the Glancaster Bombers that ended with a buzzer beater goal by Brason-Doan and a 3-3 tie with the Duffield Devils. Brason-Doan led the U14 Jr. Hounds in the three games of the round robin with three goals and an assist while Dante Caruso and Tyler Diluzio chipped in with a pair of markers and one helper apiece.

Goaltending was a strength for the Red and White throughout the five games. Owen Whitehead had a 2-0-0 record with a 2.00 goals against average while Carter Rome was 1-1-1 with a 3.00 GAA.

The U14 Jr. Hounds played the tournament without forward Charlie Corcoran and defenseman Rylan Gillson, who were both injured. Members of the U14 Jr. Hounds who played the five games of the tournament included forwards Hayden Brason-Doan, Dante Caruso, Riely Deplonty, Tyler Diluzio, Jasper Jarratt, Ethan Myers, Ashlyn Rickard, Carter Tait and Kyle Wallenius, defensemen Kipton Fera, Jeremy Jarratt, Carson Mick, Bryce Perrott and Owen Webb and goalies Carter Rome and Owen Whitehead. Ryan Corcoran is the head coach, Ed Mick, Jeff Tait and Jason Webb are the assistants and Kenny Deplonty is the manager.

OTHERS: Two other Sault Ste. Marie teams competed at other levels of the well run Jr. Knights tournament. The Soo U16 AA Jr. Greyhounds had a record of 2-2-0 in their division while the Soo U15 AA Jr. Greyhounds had 0-4-0 mark.
