Sault Ste. Marie Bantam A Lady Wildcats were in Detroit on the weekend as part of the 2014 Bauer World Invite Hockey Tournament.

It was a survival of the fittest for the Wildcats, who played six games over a three-day span — and then returned home to the Soo with the championship.

After beginning the tournament with a 2-2 tie against the London Devilettes, the Wildcats cuffed the Michigan Ice Breakers 9-1, blanked the Rocky Mountain Rough Riders of Colorado 7-0 and edged the Palmer Lady Pioneers of Alaska 3-2 to close out the round-robin.

The Wildcats then upended the Kitchener Lady Rangers 3-1 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship game against the London Devilettes, who came in as the third-ranked team in Ontario.

The title tilt went to overtime where the Wildcats prevailed 4-3 to win the championship.

The Wildcats staff includes head coach Mark Thorburn, assistants Bill Freeman, Deralise Mills and Ian Senecal, goalie coach Carl Desgagne, trainer Karissa Zack and the team manager Holly Zack.
