Winning Wednesday in the Soo

Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League and Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League both won home games on Wednesday.

At John Rhodes Community Centre, Matt Caruso’s goal 57 seconds into the second overtime helped the Thunderbirds pull out a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over the visiting Blind River Beavers.

Jaren Bellini paced the Thunderbirds with a two-goal effort before teammate Eric Hillock forced overtime with a third-period tally.

Alex Hulford, Nathan Johnson and Chris Corgan scored for Blind River, which picked up its first point of the season to improve its record to 0-9-1.

The win for the Thunderbirds was their fifth straight in extending their record to 7-2.

Meanwhile, at the Essar Centre, the Greyhounds remained unbeaten in pushing their record to 5-0 with a 6-1 drubbing of the visiting Sudbury Wolves.

Veteran forward Jared McCann, making his first appearance of the season after returning from the injured list, had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds, who out-shot Sudbury by a 52-16 margin, including a 26-1 edge in the second period.

Hounds goalie Brandon Halverson made 15 saves in the Soo net to improve his record to 5-0.

The Wolves record falls to 1-5 with the loss.
