Rhinos rout Rivermen
Kalkaska Rhinos exploded for four second-period goals en route to a 6-2 rout of the visiting Espanola Rivermen in Canadian International Hockey League action on Saturday.
Following a scoreless first period, the Rhinos got goals from Thomas Steven, two by Dan Bellafiore and Kyle Lott to jump out to a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Bellafiore increased that lead to 5-0 early in the third to complete the hat trick.
The Rivermen were able to get on the board with goals from Alex Zerbel and Cameron Anklewich but the Rhinos ended the scoring with another tally from Steven midway through the third.
“Both teams played fast-paced north, south hockey, with only five penalties the entire game,” said Kalkaska head coach Krzysztof Oliwa.
“Our team came ready to play and hungry to win a hockey game,” Oliwa added. “I don’t believe we won the game (Saturday) but we won this game during the last seven days of hard work on and off the ice and several video meetings to continuously understand what it’s going to take every one of us to be successful as a team.”
The two teams are back in action again tonight in Kalkaska.
