Playing at home on Thursday, St. Charles Spirit of the Canadian International Hockey League built up a 4-0 lead and held on for a 6-2 exhibition win over the independent Kalkaska Rhinos.

The match attracted 271 fans to the St. Charles Arena.

Alex Hester sparked the Spirit with three goals with singles tallied by Ben Miller, Scott Marshall and Trevor Hester.

Dan Bellafiore and Liam Sweeney replied for Kalkaska.

Spirit goalies Jonathan Goulet and Sylvain Morin split the duties for St. Charles while Kalkaska’s Bryan Briggs went the distance for the Rhinos.

“I was very happy with our overall game tonight,” said Spirit head coach Scott Ginson. “Kalkaska is a very good hockey team and are extremely well coached (by Krzysztof Oliwa.) Our goaltenders needed to be sharp and certainly stepped up when called upon.”
