Alexandre Savard, a 1997 birth-year defenceman from the Sudbury area, has become the first player to sign with the St. Charles Spirit of the new Canadian International Hockey League.

A strapping 6-foot-1, 215 pound defender, Savard played for the Great North Midget Hockey League champion Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves in 2013-2014.

As a 16-year old, Savard also played two games in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League with the Sudbury Nickel Barons in 2013-2014.

“Alex is a solid, stay-at-home defensemen who keeps all opponents honest every time he’s on the ice,” said St. Charles general manager Scott Ginson.

“Now, after a solid year at the AAA midget level and a couple of NOJHL games with the Nickel Barons as an affiliate player, I feel very confident that Alex is more than ready to take the next step to play junior hockey as a 17-year old. And I am more than thrilled that it will be in the CIHL and as a member of the St. Charles Spirit,” added Ginson.
