Reigning Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League champion Soo Thunderbirds have signed a rookie goalie from Thunder Bay via North Bay.

He is 6-foot-3, 180 pound puck stopper Kolton Bourret. Bourret, who has a 2005 birth date, played the 2021-2022 season with the North Bay U18 Trappers of the Great North Under 18 Hockey League. He had a 2.58 goals against average in 15 regular season games for North Bay.

Bourret also has an Ontario Hockey League affiliation as a 15th round pick at the 2021 priority selections draft from his hometown Thunder Bay Kings.

“We are excited to have Kolton join the Thunderbirds,” said Thunderbirds general manager and assistant coach Jamie Henderson. “Kolton had a tremendous under 18 season last year in North Bay and he has worked tremendously hard and is really driven to continue his journey towards playing in the OHL one day.”

Henderson, who is also the head coach of the Soo Jr. Greyhounds of the GNU18HL, knows Bourret well from having seen him in action for North Bay over the course of the ’21-22 season.

Bourret takes a goalie position on the Thunderbirds following the off season trade of Noah Metivier to the Lindsay Muskies of the Ontario Jr. Hockey League. Metivier split net minding duties with Noah Zeppa as the Thunderbirds won the ’21-22 NOJHL championship. Thus far, Zeppa has indicated that he will not play this season in order to concentrate on his studies at Algoma University.
