Not to say that the Soo U18 Greyhounds didn’t deserve to win. Just saying that the Sudbury U16 Nickel Capitals deserved a better shake from the referees.

In a spirited, well played Great North Under 18 Hockey League match this afternoon at John Rhodes Community Centre, the home side Hounds were assisted by some homer refereeing en route to a 3-1 win over the younger U16 Nickel Capitals.

Of the seven minor penalties that were called, six were against the visiting U16 Nickel Capitals. To be sure, the home team benefited from the home cooking.

Not that the U18 Hounds even needed the homer refs on their side. While the U16 Nickel Capitals put up a worthy fight, the U18 Hounds had the better scoring opportunities. But Sudbury goalie Mateo Beites, who, with a 2008 birth date is the youngest player in the GNU18HL, kept the Nickel Capitals in the game with a number of big saves.

The visitors actually scored first as plum defenseman Alexandre Valade tallied 87 seconds into the opening period. The Soo was then able to tie the game with a second period goal by Harley Wardell to set the stage for the third stanza.

And while the game appeared headed for a possible overtime, the U18 Hounds cashed in on a gift power play with just over seven minutes to go and then sealed the victory with a last minute goal as the clock ticked down. Hudson Chitraroni scored both goals for the U18 Hounds.

Besides Chitaroni from the Soo end, forward Jacob Smith was a going concern with a pair of assists while affiliate player defenseman Luca Blonda was a standout on the blue line.

And besides aforementioned goalie Miguel Beites, U16 Nickel Capitals forward Coulson Bell turned in a noticeable performance with a couple of good scoring chances and a strong defensive effort.

The first place U18 Hounds and their 17-2-0 record and the 9-8-1 U16 Hounds meet again on Sunday morning at 11:00 at the Rhodes Centre.
