There will be a fresh, new look to the coaching staff of the Soo Jr. Greyhounds of the Great North Under 18 Hockey League effective the 2023-2024 season, multiple sources have confirmed to Hockey News North.

Sean Gagnon

Sean Gagnon, who was a defenseman on the 1993 Memorial Cup champion Soo Greyhounds, will be the new head coach. The 49-year old Gagnon, who played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Greyhounds, Ottawa 67’s and Sudbury Wolves, also saw time in the National Hockey League as part of a lengthy pro career.

Gagnon will be assisted by former OHL and National Hockey League tough guy Ken Belanger as well as Sault Ste. Marie product Nick Plastino.

The soon to be 49-year old Belanger was a bruising left winger who played in the OHL with the Ottawa 67’s and the Guelph Storm before going on to skate in more than 250 NHL games spanning 10 years.

And the 37-year old Plastino was an OHL defenseman with the Barrie Colts for four seasons before embarking on a 15-year European pro career that took him to Italy, Austria and elsewhere.

Gagnon is expected to add other members to his staff once he gets organized as the new head coach of the U18 Jr. Hounds.
