Oh brother! Halletts in Kap
They more than paid their dues through the AA level under 15, under 16 and under 18 programs within the ranks of the Sault Major Hockey Association. And being cut time and time again by various AAA teams in the Sault failed to deter twin brothers Nick Hallett and Logan Hallett from reaching their goals.
And in order to try to achieve those goals, the Hallett boys ventured seven hours from home to Kapuskasing to try out for the AAA Flyers of the Great North Under 18 Hockey League. And not only did the twin brothers make the team in Kapuskasing ahead of this ’24-25 season but they were both named assistant captains by Flyers general manager Darren Potvin and head coach Alex Plamondon.
So, say no more about the drive, determination and character of the 2007 birth year forwards, who both stand in at 6 foot 2, 180 pounds. To be sure, not making a AAA team at home doesn’t mean you can’t make it somewhere else.
Moving so far away from home to pursue a hockey dream was not an easy decision, Nick told Hockey News North.
“Moving to Kapuskasing was a big change for myself, my brother and our family,” Nick began. “This being said, my parents and I had sat down and made points of pros and cons. At the same time we knew as a family that making the jump out of town had to be done since this is my last year of U18 eligibility and I thought that moving to play AAA would be best for my development.
“After talking with them and coaches from other teams and leagues, Kap stood out the most to us because they are community involved and a younger and experienced coaching staff and program. We felt that moving to Kap would open eligibility to four extra teams in the NOJHL to play for as an affiliate as well. So, we knew we had to jump on this opportunity after being cut from our local team in the Sault.
“I would like to thank my family and my coaches for believing in me and developing me into a better person and player,” Nick summed up.
As for twin brother Logan, he commented on responsibility and team work.
“Stepping into the world of AAA hockey in Kapuskasing, Ontario, brings with it a unique blend of excitement and responsibility,” Logan relayed to Hockey News North. “As you lace up your skates and don the alternate captain’s badge, you are not just playing a game; you are embodying leadership and team work. Each stride on the ice is a testament to your dedication, and a chance to inspire your teammates.”
Besides their experience from playing at the AA level at home in the Sault, both boys also got a taste of the junior game in ’23-24 as affiliate players for the Espanola Paper Kings of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League. In fact, in the game they played for Espanola, Logan scored a goal and Nick had an assist.
Hockey isn’t just about certain players who feel as though they are entitled. Hockey can also be about determined youngsters such as Nick and Logan Hallett who have had nothing handed to them.
Congratulations Nick and Logan! Enjoy your year!
