Soo Major Thunderbirds of the Great North Midget Hockey League will return to action this weekend within range of the .500 mark.

The Thunderbirds will take a record of 9-10-4 into 2016, which puts them in fifth place in the seven-team, major midget league with 22 points.

While they are in fifth place, the Thunderbirds are only six points back of the league-leading New Liskeard Cubs, who have a record of 14-8-0.

The Thunderbirds begin the 2016 portion of the schedule this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. when they will play host to the third-place North Bay Trappers at John Rhodes Community Centre.

2000 birth-year forward Lucas Theriault leads the Thunderbirds in scoring and is third in the league with 38 points, 17 of which are goals.

Defensively, the Soo midgets are led by Nolan Makkonen, a 2015 Ontario Hockey League draft pick of the Guelph Storm.
