Timmins Majors spots open

Several roster spots will be up for grabs when the Timmins Majors of the Great North Midget Hockey League hold their main tryout camp beginning on August 18 at McIntyre Arena.

Majors assistant general manager Ron Holmes told HockeyNewsNorth.com that the Timmins midgets have two to three openings on defense, four to five forward spots open and one goalie position available.

To be sure, as the Majors look ahead to the 2017-2018 campaign, there is nowhere to go but up.

The Majors finished last in the Great North in 2016-2017 with a record of 2-32-2. A major issue that affected the Majors was that nine midget-aged players left the Timmins area to play elsewhere, including the junior level.

Seeking a fresh start, there’s a new look to the Majors staff for the 2017-2018 campaign that includes first-year head coach Brandon Perry.

The 28-year old Perry, who starred for the Timmins midgets about a dozen years ago, will be assisted by Derick Martin, Darren Thib and goalie coach Trevor McGee. The aforementioned Holmes and Doug Cheechoo will share the general manager duties.

What you think about “Timmins Majors spots open”

  1. Hi Randy, i would like to hear some news regarding the North Bay Midget Trappers. There was approximately 30 players and only two tryout sessions back in April. At this time a Minor midget team was not going to happen. It was only after tryouts and cutting a number of players that a decision was made to have a minor midget team. There was @ 5 goalies who attended, two minor midget goaltenders that were elite players and two that would be average on a peewee house league team.

There has been a lot of talk about Soo Major but nothing about North Bay. From what i seen at tryouts the numbers just don’t ad up to having two teams. Their web site isn’t very good and you just don’t hear much about the midget team. Just wondering how they go about making their teams. If you could dig a little into this i’m sure i am not the only one who is curious about this.

  2. There is no need for minor midget in the north the numbers don’t add up. Especially in the soo where the junior team signed 6 midget aged kids. The aaa midget took two minor aged kids hurting the minor midget program. If rumours are true the soo team is going to have 4-5 imports . Get rid of minor midget completely and get the GNML back to the league it was 7-9 years ago.

  3. Go Majors Go !
I think Holmsey and Brandon and the crew can turn this around.

pd fraser and white flag go get a life and cut out your Negative Bull Shit.
